Congregations have previously engaged with the Risk and Compliance team, which has now expanded to include Work, Health, and Safety (WHS). This change coincides with the arrival of Kristina Moir, who joined as WHS Manager on 9 December 2024.

To reflect this broader scope, the team has been renamed Risk, Audit, and WHS.. Acting Head Devin North emphasises the team’s commitment to providing practical support and guidance, ensuring that Congregations, Volunteers, and Office Bearers are well-equipped to foster a safer and more resilient Church community.

Devin is dedicated to helping Congregations navigate risk, reframing it as an opportunity for growth rather than a challenge to overcome. As part of this approach, Risk, Audit, and WHS has relaunched Risk Bites—a resource designed to clarify responsibilities and highlight potential risks.

We asked Devin why Risk Bites is a valuable tool for Congregations.

What is the idea behind Risk Bites?

Risk Bites was originally created by the Risk Team a few years ago to share valuable insights on managing risk. However, I am now uplifting and revitalising it to be more engaging, practical, and impactful.

We believe that risk isn’t about red tape or barriers—it’s about creating safer, stronger, and more resilient communities, and acting as a safety net for which our teams can take risks safely, knowing we are there to catch them.

Through short, actionable insights, we help Congregations, Volunteers, and Office Bearers confidently navigate challenges and turn risks into opportunities. It’s about supporting people in making informed decisions that protect what matters most—their people, their mission, and their future.

How do you feel it will assist Congregations, Volunteers, and Office Bearers in their day-to-day?

Managing risk doesn’t have to be complex or overwhelming. Risk Bites simplifies the process, breaking it down into clear, practical steps that fit naturally into everyday decisions.

Whether it’s creating safer spaces, ensuring compliance, or strengthening governance, these insights will help individuals and teams feel confident and supported in their roles.

At its core, Risk Bites is about empowering people with the right knowledge at the right time—so they can focus on their mission, knowing they are prepared and protected.

Could you talk a little about the Risk, Audit, and WHS team and how you will be able to assist the wider Church?

Our team is here to do more than just identify risks—we’re here to collaborate, support, and provide real-world solutions that make a difference. Risk, Audit, and WHS are not about ticking boxes; they’re about building a culture of trust, accountability, and care across the Synod.

We partner with Congregations, Presbyteries, and leadership to ensure risks are well-managed, workplaces are safe, and governance is strong—so that ministries can thrive with confidence.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

Risk isn’t something to be feared—it’s something to be understood, managed, and even embraced as an opportunity for growth. With Risk Bites, we’re making risk an exciting and engaging conversation that helps every part of the Church flourish.

Our team is here to support, guide, and empower, ensuring that every Congregation, Volunteer, and Office Bearer feels equipped, informed, and inspired to create a safer and stronger future.
