Our church’s voice on climate – we have more impact working together!

The Uniting Advocacy team is making a final call for Uniting Church congregations to join a month of action before the federal election.

Why would we do that? There will be many different answers:

  • Because we care about the world and all its creatures
  • Because of the impact of climate change on the world’s poorest people
  • Because we are concerned for the welfare of future generations

Whatever reasons matter to you, we are aiming to demonstrate to our political leaders that everyday Australians, including members of the Uniting Church, care deeply about action on climate, alongside issues like cost-of-living.

Taking individual action is meaningful, but we can have more impact when we act together. That’s why we are encouraging as many members and congregations as possible to take part in one or more of four weekly actions:

Week 1- March 9: is hanging a climate banner and taking a photo of it with as many of your congregation as possible. If you don’t have a banner you can make one.

Week 2 - March 16: is sending the climate banner photo to your local MP with a letter or other message on why you care about climate and what positive action on climate you want the next government to take

Week 3 – March 23: is sending postcards to your local federal members or candidates calling for investment in renewable energy, with room for a personal message or story from you. You could hold a postcard session after worship, in small groups, or in other gatherings.

Week 4 – March 30: is distributing yard signs from our friends at Renew Australia for All, calling for government support for home electrification and energy upgrades for all Australians, including those on low incomes and renting.

What we need and what we will offer

To make this happen we need someone from each congregation (you?) to put their hand up to be a climate champion and point of contact for the actions

The Uniting Advocacy team will provide guidance and support every step of the way. This will include:

  • Clear instructions on how to take these actions
  • A template letter to your MP (but feel free to write your own)
  • Suggested slogans for your church noticeboard
  • Postcards, yard signs and bumper stickers sent to you (depending on what you order)
Do we have to do all the actions to participate?

No! Although we hope that congregations can participate in as many actions as possible, it’s fine to take on only those you have capacity for.

In hope & action,
Jono Row
Uniting Advocacy team
