On Sunday, March 2, Ginninderry hosted its largest-ever community Iftar, bringing together more than 240 Canberrans at The Link to share in the spirit of Ramadan. Now in its fifth year, the annual event has become a cornerstone of cultural unity in the region, fostering connections across faiths, nationalities, and backgrounds.
Iftar—the evening meal that marks the end of the daily fast during Ramadan—is a time of gratitude, reflection, and togetherness. This year’s gathering saw a diverse group of attendees break their fast at sunset, reinforcing the power of food and fellowship in building stronger community ties.
Among the distinguished guests were Her Excellency the Honourable Ms Sam Mostyn AC, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, and His Excellency Mr Simeon Beckett SC. Also in attendance were the Honourable Dr Andrew Leigh MP, representing the Prime Minister, Brother Hamza from United Muslims Canberra, Shane Rattenbury MLA, Jo Clay MLA, and Hands Across Canberra CEO Genevieve Jacobs, underscoring the event’s significance.
Hosted in collaboration with HelpingACT and Kippax Uniting Church (whose members also volunteered at the event), the Iftar provided an opportunity for attendees to experience Ramadan traditions firsthand while deepening cultural understanding. As the sun set over the Brindabellas, Brother Hamza delivered the adhan (call to prayer), signaling the time to break the fast. Guests then gathered to pray on the scenic grounds of The Link before sharing a meal.
The traditional fast-breaking began with dates and rose water, followed by an array of delicious dishes, including zucchini balls, fresh fruits, aromatic curries, pides, colourful salads, and succulent kebabs. To end the evening on a sweet note, guests indulged in homemade Palestinian knafeh and baklava. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, with children playing together while adults exchanged stories and forged new friendships.
Reflecting on the event’s growth, Mohammed Ali, Chair of HelpingACT, highlighted its increasing impact. “When we started in 2021, an Iftar organized in conjunction with a developer was a new concept. Now, in 2025, we see familiar faces returning and bringing friends,” he said. “Ramadan’s blessings are meant to be shared with all humanity, and tonight demonstrates how food and friendship can transcend any differences.”
For those who missed the event, HelpingACT and Kippax Uniting Church will host another community Iftar at Kippax Uniting Church on Saturday, March 15, at 6:45 p.m.
