Discernment Retreat Offers Space for Reflection and Connection
For those walking the path of spiritual discernment, the journey can be both deeply personal and profoundly communal.
For those walking the path of spiritual discernment, the journey can be both deeply personal and profoundly communal. One of the key resources available to those undertaking a Period of Discernment (PoD) in the Uniting Church is the Discernment Retreat which is a space designed to nurture reflection, connection, and growth.
The most recent retreat was held in May 2025, bringing together a small group of individuals seeking clarity around their calling. These retreats are offered as part of the broader discernment process and give participants the chance to explore new spiritual practices and share their stories.
Over the course of the weekend, retreatants engaged in a variety of contemplative and creative practices. They walked the Labyrinth, experienced Visio Divina and Lectio Divina, prayed the Examen, and reflected on their life stories.
These practices offered windows into how God might be speaking in the everyday.
There was also time for connection: conversation around meals, laughter between sessions, singing, prayers and the sacred act of gathering for Communion. Many who attended found themselves forming unexpected friendships, grounded in mutual vulnerability and shared hope.
Feedback from the May retreat revealed just how impactful the experience was for many pointing the gentle power of retreats like these:
“A safe space and time to focus on myself.”
“The opportunity to hear and be heard is so powerful and potentially transformative.”
“It was wonderful to be able to be cared for while I asked questions and was heard.”
“I met amazing people and learnt of their journeys. This made me accept mine.”
“Enough space for reflection on materials or activities that are presented. Balance of inputs and output, action and reflection. Space for sharing. Permission to listen as a worthwhile contribution.”
“Would definitely go to another one if available.”
If you’re currently in a Period of Discernment or considering one, the next retreat offers a chance to step away and listen more deeply. It will be held from Friday 28 to Sunday 30 November 2025 at the Centre for Ministry in North Parramatta.
Spots are limited to just 10 participants, with priority given to those registered for the PoD.
